Why some months get a third check
A year has 52 weeks, so every-two-weeks pay comes 26 times. Twelve months of two checks is only 24, which leaves two extra checks that land in months with an early first payday. Some years, depending on the calendar, it's 27 checks and three months get a third.
Weekly pay works the same way: 52 checks, 48 if every month had four, so four months a year (sometimes five) bring a fifth.
Give the third check a job before it lands
If you split monthly bills over two checks, the third check in those months has no monthly bills on it. It's the easiest money of the year to plan, and the easiest to lose to a weekend. A few common jobs for it, your call which:
- Catch up a bill you're behind on.
- Start or refill a cushion for the next surprise.
- Pay ahead on next month's rent, so the next check carries less.
- Put a chunk toward a goal you already set.
If you split bills by due date instead, check which bills fall in that check's two weeks; it may carry a few.
