The example

Made-up example

One person, paid $2,400 every other Friday, with these monthly bills:

BillDueA month
Rent1st$1,700
Electric and internet25th$160
Phone12th$80
Car insurance5th$150
Car payment20th$330
Streaming and apps15th$40
Card minimum18th$80
Total$2,540

Two checks a month, so each check covers half: $2,540 ÷ 2 = $1,270. The check that lands before rent is due won't always hold exactly half; here's how to even it out.

This example has a $330 car payment, $165 of each check.

One check, start to finish

Made-up example
Take-home check$2,400
Half the monthly bills−$1,270
Set aside−$160
Groceries for two weeks−$230
Gas for two weeks−$90
Left for day to day$650
÷ 14 days = $46.43, rounded down$46 a day
Left over at payday (14 × $46 = $644)$6

$46 a day covers everything not on the list: food out, coffee, a store run. Spend less one day and the days after get a little more; spend more and they get less. To see it with your own numbers, open this example in the calculator and change what's different.

Compared with the 50/30/20 rule of thumb

The 50/30/20 rule of thumb splits take-home pay into 50% needs, 30% wants and 20% savings. On a $2,400 check that's $1,200 for needs, $720 for wants and $480 for savings.

In the example, needs (the bills, groceries and gas) take $1,590, 66% of the check. Half the rent alone is $850, 35%. When rent is that big a share, the rule's split doesn't fit, and the set-aside starts smaller ($160, 7%). It's a rule of thumb, not a rule; the daily number is what tells you whether the check works.
